About the Project

Nestled on a steep hill in San Francisco’s eclectic Bernal Heights neighborhood, this 1890s Victorian home, owned by architect Kirt Melander, underwent a full renovation that merged historical charm with unique, artistic design choices. The goal was to open up the floor plan, connecting the living, dining, kitchen, and sitting rooms to highlight the stunning views of the urban landscape. Collaborating with Lee & Co., Kirt’s vision was brought to life through meticulous craftsmanship, attention to detail, and innovative solutions that embraced both the architectural history of the home and modern design sensibilities.

A key feature of the renovation was a large, custom awning window that framed the breathtaking views perfectly. Despite its size, Kirt wanted the window to be functional. After numerous attempts to find a manufacturer, Lee & Co. sourced a custom window maker who could deliver the functionality and aesthetic the client envisioned. Historical integrity was preserved by replacing 1960s aluminum windows with period-appropriate wood sash versions and the original wood floors were stained and waxed using an uncommon technique that created a unique texture. An antique French island was installed as the kitchen’s centerpiece. The open floor plan connected the living, dining, and kitchen areas, creating a bright, modern space that honored the home’s Victorian roots.
